
As parents, we often celebrate a child’s biggest achievements.

Perhaps no milestone generates more discussion than crawling.
Some children skip crawling altogether and move directly to walking.
Parents are often told not to worry because the child eventually learned to walk.
While many children who skip crawling do very well, crawling provides several unique neurological benefits.
During crawling, children develop:

- Shoulder girdle strength
- Visual tracking
- Hand-eye coordination
- Vestibular development
- Spatial awareness
Cross-crawl movements require communication between both hemispheres of the brain through the corpus callosum.

For this reason, many developmental specialists encourage children to spend adequate time crawling before walking independently.

The goal is not perfection.

Each roll, crawl, sit, and step contributes to the organization of brain networks that support learning, movement, attention, and behavior.
Most children naturally progress through these stages without difficulty.
